Magento 1 Support: How Things Have Changed After Magento 2?

When Magento 2 was released in November 2015, it was declared that Magento would provide support to 1.x users for another 3 years. A large number of merchants opted for a migration to the new version while those starting up for the first time invested in Magento 2 development to gear up for the end of this period. There are yet others who continue running their stores on the same version as they were not really keen to disrupt their businesses nor wanted to invest money in the migration process.

Now that we are well into the mid of 2018, there is a widespread feeling of concern amongst merchants running their stores on the previous versions. Well, the question now is whether this is really the beginning of the end or is there an alternative? Will they have to face issues related to the withdrawal of Magento support as announced earlier by the platform? Despite all that has been circulated about Magento’s end-of-life in November this year, an official announcement is yet to be made to confirm the apprehension. Still, as a store owner, you need to know about the implications if the worse happens in a few months from now.

Withdrawal of Magento support: What will it mean?

The withdrawal of support may be a considerable risk for the merchants not taking up Magento 2 migration as a part of their survival strategy. It could have the following implications for them:

  • An absence of security patch support
  • Lack of support for extensions
  • Increase in monthly maintenance costs
  • Difficulty in maintaining PCI compliance
